The energy and "way to" of a small city is powerfull and, often, eventually wins. Problems are much bigger in small towns, everybody knows each other and knows about each other's lifes, the status quo is so strong that even people who come from bigger and different cities get swallowed by it as time goes by. It is a prime example of why the saying "Small town, big hell" exists.

Even with strong evidence that the suspect is not guilty, Tae-yoon tries to kill him and convince himself that he was the murderer, just to get a sense of closing, although he's stopped by his coleague before he harms an innocent person like the small town police used to do. The apex of the movie occours as Tae-yoon mentally breaks when a local girl who helped him with clues during the investigation gets killed by the murderer. An innocent man is forced to confess even though he's innocent after being tortured by the police Cho Yong-koo, the most violent of the small town detectives, loses his leg after fighting with a bunch of civilians who were tired of his authority abuse Baek Kwang-ho, an initial intelectually disabbled suspect who ended up being a crime witness dies due to a series of mishandlings during his interrogation that made him scared of the police crew and Seo Tae-yoon grows more and more frustrated as the investigation gets harder despite all the clues the policemen get during it.

While 2 of the three detectives follow the status quo of the town, using violent and non-precise methods of interrogation and investigation (like torturing suspects and "looking deep into their eyes" to prove their inocence) to catch the killer, Seo Tae-yoon, a detective who comes from Seoul tries to solve the crime with more evidential and professional methods that slowly makes the investigation progress. The story follows a group of detectives trying to solve a series of violent murders of women in a small town. I've just wacthed Memories of a Murder and, other than confirming the fact that the Korean cinema industry is currently my favorite one worldwide and that Bong Joon-ho had been dropping masterpieces for a decade before parasite, has made me remember an old saying from East Asia that says "Small town, big hell".
